Reason For Blood Along With Urine When Having A Bladder Infection?

I ve had bladder infections, just a couple of times which were very far apart. only one time before this did I have a lot of blood, more blood than urine. When I went to my doctor, he was unable to do a stick test because I had taken Azo rto ease the discomfort when I went to the bathroom. He s sending me for a CT scan with contrast to rule out kidney or bladder cancer or something with my ureters. I am 66 yrs old. What s your feeling about this?

Urologist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist,i think doing a CECT(contrast CT ),is the correct step.
Blood in urine isn't normal. You may get an idea of it's source, from the CT scan. Your blood tests should've included a PSA , also.
Further treatment will be decided, based on this scan report.
You may send the scan and other reports to me, for an expert opinion,as a direct question. Drink 10-12 glasses fluids daily.

Urologist Dr. Dr. P. T. Patil's  Response
Hello
Thanks for query.

Painless hematuria with frequent episodes of UTI at the age of 66 years can be due to one of the following reasons
1) Infection
2) Mass lesion either in kidney or bladder and need to be investigated in detail to trace out the cause and source of of bleeding .

You need to consult qualified Urologist for clinical examination and get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis.
1) Urine routine and culture.
2) Ultrasound scanning of abdomen and pelvis
3) C.T scan of abdomen (KUB) plain and with contrast

Further more investigations if required and treatment will depend upon result of these tests and final diagnosis.
