Reason For Swelling In The Thyroid?

My minor daughter (15) is following a Gluten Free diet, and I cook 90% (if not more) of her meals. We hardly have processed foods, fast foods, etc. I accidentally got the Non-iodized Salt, on about Sept 12th, 2012. The last two weeks (About 10/12)she has gone without her multivitamins which have 150 MCG of Iodine in them. I think you get where I am going with this. Right? On Friday I thought I saw her Thyroid was swollen, by Sunday it looked like she swallowed a baseball. Took her to her peds, and her TSH is 64 and her t4 I believe he said was 0.2 or something like that, I couldn't hear well. He doesn't think it could be her Iodine, and wants to label her Hashimoto's and put her on Synthroid. Could it be fixed with Iodine which over the month she has been sorely lacking?

Hello,
I have gone carefully through your report and I am giving you some more suggestions.
First let me confess that I agree with your doctor who suggested you to check for Hashimoto thyroiditis and start the treatment with levothyroxine.
Taking low amount of iodine for some months doesn't cause such a high TSH level even if it was so, in these cases should be ruled out an Hashimoto thyroiditis. You mentioned that she is diagnosed with celiac disease too, that is an autoimmune disease (like Hashimoto thyroiditis), that is another reason why she should rule out other autoimmune pathologies.
Whatever the etiology of hypothyroidism is, she should start levothyroxine treatment to prevent further possible effects of it.
Hope you have the answer of your concerns now.

Kind regards,
Dr.M.guni
