Recommend Hysteroscopy Due To Polyp In Uterus. Had Long Periods With Pain. Will It Affect My Fertility ?

Hello Dr.,

I am a 27 year old female, also virgin. I had an echogram yesterday and my gynecologist saw a 1.3 cm polyp in the uterus and immediately recommended hysteroscopy. The symptoms I've been having are:
a- long periods
b- spotting
c- pain during the period, a bit more than normal

I got so scared, as I have a mother who had died from cancer, and just seeing a foreign body made me scared. I wasn't able to ask those questions, but I would very much appreciate your help:

- will it affect my fertility in the future?
- is it safe?
- why does it happen? Why did I get it?
- why surgery not pills ( using general anesthesia )
- I will lose my hymen, right? ( Does it only have to be vaginal? Isn't there any other way? as this is a sensitive subject in our culture
- will I have normal periods afterwards
- Is there a chance it would recur

Hello and welcome to HCM,
A uterine polyp is a hyperplastic lesion arising in the uterus.
The polyp may be responsible for menorrhagia (long periods) and dysmenorrhoea (painful menstruation).
Hysteroscopy is a procedure in which the uterine cavity is viewed from inside.
This is a safe procedure.
The polyp can be removed from the uterine cavity while performing hystroscopy.
Polyp will not affect fertility in future.
Polyp appears due to hyperplastic process.
Removal of the polyp can resolve the menstrual abnormalities i.e. long periods and painful periods.
In hystroscopy, the scope will be introduced in the uterine cavity so the hymen will be damaged in the procedure.
Recurrence can occur however, not all cases recur.

Thanks and take care
