Hello,

The symptoms you mentioned points towards the diagnosis of acute otitis Media which is painful due to collection of fluid behind the ear. The cause can be a retracted drum due to infection or allergies. This leads to ear drum rupture where the fluid starts coming out of ear and there is relief in the pain as well. At this moment most important thing to do is to keep your ear dry by using a ear plug while taking a shower or cotton with some vaseline on it which will seal the external auditory canal and avoid the entry of water. You can take the pain killer as on need basis.

Please use allergy nasal spray preferably Fluticasone for another 2 weeks and keep your ear dry during this time. The ruptured membrane will heal itself and you should be fine. You may want to continue the treatment for the retracted ear drum which is to continue using the Fluticasone spray and use Vicks for steam inhalation for 3-4 weeks. This will treat the root cause as well.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Omair Choudhry, Otolaryngologist / ENT Specialist
