Redness And Swelling In Foot With Tenderness. Had Cast And Sutures Removed. Taken Keflex. Will I Be Okay?

My cast and sutures were removed 5 days ago. They are topical on my foot. The surgeon assisted an ortho-tech (who had finished her training 9 months previously) with the removal and gave observations and remarks as they worked together. Leaving a suture in and the possibility of an abscess from such was stressed to the young tech. There were a number of sutures in my foot but two areas are red and there is still swelling, acute tenderness and redness around them. I took Keflex 500 mg gen for 10 days starting 5 days post-op allegedly to prevent infection then was given Bactrin-DS gen bid for 10 days. Now on my 5th day of second Rx but tenderness and swelling continue especially since I am required to wear a toe alignment splint and boot after my cast was removed and this aggravates the areas which are exhibiting the symptoms. I am calling my physician Monday but am concerned and pretty much NOT sleeping until I can get through to my personal MD. Thank You (I've never asked a question on-line but the answers I read on you site were excellent) !

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome at HCM.

I have read details of your question.

It looks that you are having superficial infection in two of your stitches.Treatment of this consist of administration of a broad spectrum antibiotic for at least 7-10 days.It is better to have a culture swab at this time. This will help in knowing the type of infective organism & antibiotic which is effective against this.
Hope this will help you.

With best wishes.
