Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a nephew who has a growth problem. He has not had a proper diagnosis but has seen several specialist who have recommended growth hormone injections . My concern is that he has severe Asthma and I have researched the growth hormone injections which state that there have been reported deaths in patients who have acute respiratory failure . That is a risk we are not willing to take but I m not sure if Asthma falls under acute respiratory failure .
Your concern is right, hormones therapy like all other drugs may have many side effect and should only be used after proper assessment. However, if needed growth hormone can be used in an asthmatic patient. Asthma is not a contraindication to growth hormone. There are no reasons to think that growth hormone would be fatal in acute respiratory failure, but just to note that respiratory failure itself is always a serious condition and may be fatal many times. Its the end of al respiratory disease. Asthma does not mean respiratory failure, though asthma can sometimes lead to respiratory failure, this is very rare and most of the asthma patients do not develop respiratory failure. So to end it, if advised by an expert, he can be given the injection even if he has asthma. If you have any concern you can discuss with your doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
