Schizoaffective, Depressed, Hallucination, Delusion, Insulin Intolerance And Obese. Why Do Medications Add More Fat?
well i'm obese and schizoaffective (mental health is my major concern here) but social acceptance of both the obese and the mentally insecure are not there. it's as if we are allowed to be hated and discriminated upon plyed to our own will be it as it may. anyway i do not like to take the medications as prescribed matter of fact i fed up with the results...i only get fatter but still hallucinate and am still delusional and am rather depressed and iritaed and irritable irate even that i am now being diagnosed with insulin intolerance. anyway the big deal here is that a sage that i know in jerusalem is telling me to go holistic, is that possible?
I also think management of disease should take into consideration all apsects, include both the physical and the pschological aspects. Holistic in one sense could mean disease and I would very much be in favor of this. It s not surprising that some people when under such drugs do gain weight, not due to direct effect of drugs, but due to stress, in appropriate eating habits and lack of exercise.
I always do as much as possible, under such circumstances, to take care of the psychological needs of my patient, never forgetting the role of the nutritionist.
Hi. I have gone through your post. Let me tell you that having a physical or mental illness does not make you socially inapt. Both obesity and schizoaffective disorder are reasonably treatable. So do not pay much heed to what others say. Now weight gain is a common side effect of a number of medications used in schizoaffective disorder, and they might lead to the development of insuli resistance and metabolic syndrome. So this must be taken care of and considered.
There are a number of proven and scientifically established methods for dealing with obesity, as well as drugs with least effect on weight which will manage schizoaffective disorder as well. Please consider these with your psychiatrist. Going holistic might help you deal with the stresses you describe, but the efficacy with the main disorder that you have is not described. There are chances the schizoaffective disorder deteriorates if you leave medicines without supervision.
Hello...... Thanks for your query. A number of psychotropic medications used for schizoaffective disorder including antipsychotics and antidepressants may lead to weight gain by their action on chemical messengers in brain and abdomen. The management would include dietary restrictions, daily exercise regimen and medications like digestive enzyme inhibitors. Insulin resistance along with weight gain are part of metabolic syndrome. Contact a dietician as well as incorporate daily exercises as early as possible. Wish you good health. Regards Dr Sundar Psychiatrist
