Severe Calf Pain, Difficulty In Walking After Dancing All Through The Day, No Visible Damage. What Should Be Done?

I danced at a wedding this weekend. The next day (yesterday) I couldn t walk without pain in my calves. Today I can t walk at all. I can shuffle but the pain is severe. Muscle relaxers didn t help much. There is no visible damage, no swelling or bruising, but they hurt (mildly even at rest. On a scale of 1 to 10 I m at about an 8 standing or moving. At rest I m about a 3. RICE doesn t seem to be the solution since there is no swelling. What can/should I do?

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

You might having calf muscle strain.
In this muscle is stretched causing some small micro tears in the muscle fibers. Full recovery takes approximately two weeks.

Wrap the calf to keep the blood from pooling in the foot, and keep it elevated. Anti-inflammatory medication may help reduce pain.

A visit to a physician and or a physical therapist is recommended to ensure in fast rehab.

Hope I have answered your query.

Wishing you good health.
Regards.

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

After exercise or over-exerting the calves or legs, you may experience stiffness, cramping, or a sharp pain in one or both calves. This may be a result of a muscle strain or even tear.

A very common cause of calf pain is poor circulation. Varicose veins in the calf, while not necessarily dangerous, can ache all day and night.

When you visit the doctor for calf pain, he will probably perform a physical exam first so that he can get a better sense of why you might be experiencing pain. He may then perform more diagnostic tests.

A common way to treat the pain is what is known as RICE, which stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. This implies that you need to give rest to a calf, apply ice on the area but for a maximum of 20 minutes, use a bandage to compress the leg and elevate the leg to a level which is above the level of your heart. Moist heat in the form of hot water bags can be applied to the injured area after 72 hours.

Hope I have answered your query.

Wishing you good health.
Regards.
