Severe Cold With Swollen Lymph Nodes

I am a 24 year old female and have had a cold for 3 days. today is day 3 actually. it started out as colds for me normally do, waking up with a dry swollen sore throat and then gradually started to feel that yucky feeling in my nose knowing i was getting a cold. but yesterday my neck started hurting really really bad. i thought it was just sore from being propt up on my pillows so i removed the pillows. then today i went to work and my neck is so tender to the touch and feels a bit swollen i guess. i know the lymph nodes behind both of my ears are swollen, the left one is quite large actually. the ones under my jaw are not very swollen, but im guessing the nodes in my neck are also swollen which is causing the pain. however, the nodes are really uncomfortable right now and they feel kind of like they are burning. my neck feels like i have a sunburn because it is very sensitive to my touch and my shoulders and neck feel acky.. my entire head feels really hot from the inside like i have a fever but when you touch the skin it feels normal but i have the sweats..My face and scalp will not stop sweating and it just feels like the are behind my ears and my neck are on fire.. my cold is much better than it was, i can breath out of my nose again, i have my taste back and im no longer sneezing. but my mucous isnt runny anymore its thicker and has a yellow tinge to it which im suspecting my cold turned into a sinus infection because i still sound all stuffed up when i talk and there is a very very slight pressure in my nose. No coughing though and my chest doesnt hurt. But why am i sweating and feel so hot under my skin but when i touch my skin it is not hot like a fever? and why are the nodes behind my ears and the back of my neck feel like they are on fire?? what can i do about the soreness these are causing me??

Otolaryngologist / ENT Specialist Dr. Sumit Bhatti's  Response
1. There are on an average up to three hundred lymph nodes in the head and neck region. They drain specific sites and regions.

2. Your symptoms indicate an infection, probably viral.

3. Since your nasal secretions are becoming thicker and changing color along with a improvement in your cold, there is a possibility of super-added bacterial infection and sinusitis.

4. As our sinuses have a large surface area, toxins generated by infection are readily absorbed and feverishness is common.

5. The burning pain and soreness in your neck signifies an active and spreading inflammatory process.

6. I suggest that you should take a full course of antibiotics and supportive medication such as anti - inflammatory, anti -allergic and mucolytic medications under the supervision of your local physician. Steam Inhalation and medicated gargles will also help.
