Severe Pain In Right Rib Cage Going Towards Back. Blood Tests Normal. Diagnosed Possible Costchondritis. Thoughts?
I am having horrible right rib cage pain,in lower ribs, pain wraps around to my back. I have had blood tests of all sorts, scans and its not kidney stones and I had my gall bladder removed years ago. The one doctor thought it was costchondritis, but my family doc doesn't think so. The pain gets so bad I curl up in a ball and cry for hours. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. thank you. Brenda
HI Brenda ! I am Dr Shareef, a general surgeon answering your query.
From your history, if I would have been your treating doctor, I would have investigated you in lines of pancreatitis, specially if you consume any alcoholic drinks. The pain of pancreatitis is very severe, sometimes radiating to back. This can be diagnosed by an increased amylase/lipase level of the collected blood, and preferably a CT scan after doing a preliminary ultrasound abdomen. Pain of chostochondritis may be there in the rib margins, but possibly will not radiate to the back.
For the present, you take a proton pump inhibitor, and a probiotic agent during the investigation time. Thanks and good luck.
Thank you and good luck.
