Severe Pain In Right Toe, Sensitive To Touch, Pain On Walking. Causes And Treatment Options?
I got up Monday morning with unbearable pain in my right big toe . It hurts when I try walking on it normally, its not swollen and its very sentive when I touch the right side of the toe. The pain I m experiencing is not in the joints but in the toe it self. If anyone can help tell me the cause and possible treatment it will be very helpful.
Hello,
There could be two reasons for this pain.
1.. Gout
2.. Ingrown toe nail
More likely it seems to be due to gout in which there is build up of uric acid in blood leading to inflammation of toe joint. The build up of uric cad results in crystallisation of uric acid crystals in toe joint leading to inflammation.
This condition also develops in obese people and in people suffering from diabetes or kidney disease or anaemias.
Treatment involves medications.
Ingrown toenail occurs when edge of the nail goes down into the skin of toe resulting in redness swelling and pain.
Treatment involves removing a part of nail along with a course of antibiotics.
Consult your doctor who can examine you and diagnose and treat your problem whatever it might turn out to be.
Thanks

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello.
Thanks for posting your query.
According to your description , big toe pain seems to be inflammatory in nature. It can be due to acute episode of gout.
I advice you to give you rest to your foot, take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin 1 tablet with food as and when required (upto 4 tablets daily) to reduce pain and inflammation and consult your doctor for thorough examination of big toe and rule out any infective cause.
Pain in your right big toe can be due to sprain of the ligaments around the big toe joint. It can be due to some excessive strain on the big toe. Give rest to your foot. As your pain started on Monday that is about a week back, doing hot fomentation will be helpful in reducing the pain and swelling. Taking pain killer like Ibuprofen twice a day after meals along with serratiopeptidase and antacid will be beneficial.
If the problem persists get your blood tested for Uric Acid and get a X-Ray of your Foot done (AP,Lateral and Oblique view) and consult an Orthopedician. Also check for any ingrown nail. Take medicines under medical supervision only.
I hope this is helpful to you.
Thanks.
