Shall I Go To An Endocrinologist For My Hashimoto's?
My GP resuses to refer me to an endrocrinologist for my Hashimoto's. (Canadian, of course)
I am on .05 mg thyroxin daily. Have had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, tired and sleeping a lot. I decided to take matters into my own hands and am taking 180 mcg. daily iodine supplement. My
blood pressure after 3 months is 120/52 (with meds) and I'm not tired all day. Waht do you think?
Hypothyroidism is treated based on thyroid function tests and not bases on symptoms. So I suggest you to increase on decrease the thyroid hormone dose based on thyroid function tests, Which your GP will be able to help you with.
Iodine supplementation will not improve thyroid function in Hashimoto's - the basic logic is this disease is not due to iodine deficiency but altered immunity. The iodine requirement in people with hashimoto'sis in fact low.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
