Sharp Chest Pain On Drinking Cold Liquids. Chest X-ray, Ultrasound Normal. Causes For Pain?

Hi, I get a sharp chest pain on the left side while drinking any cold liquids, this just started yesterday, however I do have a history of chest pain. I have been getting chest pain for about one year. I have had a chest x-ray and chest ultrasound done but there were no problems found. The pain only lasts a couple seconds, was just wondering what this could be?

Dear Concerned.,

Thanks for writing to us.

In all probabality ,the pain that you are describing could be due to a minor lesion in the Gastro oesophageal junction. As the liquid crosses the ulcerated area in the region the exposed nerve endings get stimulated and you get pain.

The right investigation for you is Upper GE Endoscopy and consult a Gastro enterologist.

Till then pls refrain from oily/spicy food/smoking/drinking ie., hurry/worry and curry. Have Antacids/ Proton Pump inhibitors/Spasmolytics/Probiotics.Have a propped up position in bed to prevent gastro esophageal reflux which would aggravate the symptom.

In addition if you have any suspicion / your fears about any Cardiac causes kindly go for an ECG also and get it reported. In all probabality it is not due to any Cardiac causes at all.

Wishing a speedy recovery.,
