Shin Bruised, Lump Formed After Been Hit By A Ball. Swelling In Ankle. Blood Clots Possible?

My husband pitches softball and was hit with a ball off the bat right on the inner calf close to shin...it lumped up right away and bruised. While the bruise has gone away and the lump has gone down...it still hurts to touch and his ankle has started swelling. He has been on his feet a lot working as this injury occurred 4days ago. I'm worried about blood clots...because his leg does throb a lot?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
The area mentioned has little soft tissue, any trauma here will give rise to a haematoma(blood collection). The ankle swelling may be related to his standing on his feet for long hours. This injury is unlikely to result in Deep Vein Thrombosis(DVT) or blood clots in the leg vessels.Your doctor can easily rule out this condition by getting a Doppler study of the leg veins done, this will help rule out any blood clots as suspected.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hi,

From description it seems to be soft tissue injury . Large lump might be due to haematoma formation(collection of blood).
You need an x-ray to rule out any bony injury.

I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.Beside icing and elevating it, you can take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid putting weight and rest well.

Regards.
