Shin Injury. Stitches Received, Pain, Discharge, Leg Swelling. Treatment Options?

My 86 year old mother injured her shin 1 month ago. She had to have 20 stitches. The stiches have been removed and the skin around the scar is not red but her injury is still painful, leaking and her leg is swollen (especially at night). Any tips on how to help her heal faster? Should we keep the injury covered or expose it to air etc...

Thanks for your query.
Old age is a cause for delayed healing of wounds.
But according to your words the leg is swollen and the wound is painful and leaking.Is she having fever too?Is pus coming out ? There are chances that she developed chronic osteomyelitis. You must get it checked up from your doctor and get a X Ray done.
Apply antiseptics like providone iodine locally on the wound. Keep it clean and prevent from getting soiled.
Taking Vit C will help in healing process.
For pain give her analgesic like paracetamol.
