Shoe Pushed The Nail In, Hurts While Walking, Blood Clot Under Big Toe Nail. What To Do ?

Hi,
I went for a trek last weekend and I was wearing a tight fitted shoes (not a very good idea). The shoe pushed the nail in and it hurt while I was walking. Yesterday I noticed blood clotting under my big toe nail. Today it became even darker and is very huge ( almost half of the toe nail). And it hurts when I touch the toe. What do I do to make this clot better and not hurting? I am not sure which doctor to visit for this issue. Please advise.

Thank you

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The description of the symptoms typically suggests the formation of SUBUNGUAL HEMATOMA (blood clot beneath the nail).

The commonest symptom is severe throbbing pain and tenderness to touch.

The blood clot collected under the nail has to be removed or drained to relieve pressure and pain. The hematoma can be drained by -

* CAUTERY - An electro cautery device is used to burn a hole in the nail through which the blood escapes out. This procedure is painless.

* PAPER CLIP METHOD - A heated paper clip is used to make a hole in the nail

Consult your treating physician and follow his advice.
