Should Aspercreme Be Discontinued Before A Prostate Surgery?
Hi. I am a 88-year old man with a pacemaker/defibrilator and I am frequently using Aspercreme (or topical gels like it) to treat pain from arthritis. I am scheduled for a surgical prostate procedure, and I am wondering if this creme should be discontinued prior to surgery because I was advised that any product containing diclofenac should be discontinued. Thank you.
The answer to your question is: Yes, you should discontinue it.
Aspercreme is used to alleviate mild pain and belongs to the salicylates class of drugs. These are known to increase the risk of hemorrhage, including bleeding following surgery, and therefore it is advised to be abandoned at least two weeks before the intervention.
Even though Aspercreme is used topically (locally) and you might be exposed to quite low doses of the drug, to be safe, it is advised that it is also discontinued before surgery.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ervin Toçi
