Should Ecosprin And Clopidogrel Be Stopped Before A Dental Procedure?

Hi My father suffered heart attack 1.5 years back & currently in on Rozucor gold & Ramistart mxl 2.5/25 + diabetic medicines. 3 months back he was diagnosed with organised clot for which 3 months course of acitrom 3.5 mg was done. Now he had to undergo tooth extraction for which dentist has asked to stop ecosprin 3 days before extraction and to stop clopidrogel 5 days before extraction Is it safe to stop these medicines before dental prodedure? Eco was done last month & report was fine.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Yes, before dental extraction one should stop Ecosprin and Clopidogrel. There is a chance of increased bleeding after dental extraction if the patient is on those medications. Since the benefit outweighs the risk, there is no harm in stopping it for a short period of 3 to 5 days. After the extraction, from the next day he can resume these medications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sanjay Kini
