Should I Go For Hysterectomy Or Oophorectomy With An Increase In BRCA1?

BRCA 1. TNBC in 2004 left breast cancer. 2013 right breast cancer. Had chemo,DIEP FLAP ( 8/13). Now DR wants me to have ooph. Some women I know said I should have hysterectomy. They say you can leave behind ovarian cells. I tried to look up Primary Peritoneal Carcinoma. BRCA 1 Has a increase of this type of cancer too. Would you recommend having a hysterectomy over ooph ? would that prevent me from getting ovarian cancer anywhere else? MY test show I don t have ovarian cancer but want to do surgery to prevent it. My sister past away from ovarian cancer at 40 and my mom died of breast cancer at 49. we did not know we were BRCA 1.

Having BRCA 1 increases the risk of a large number of cancers but the two most important are breast and ovarian cancer. You have already been treated for breast cancer. For preventing ovarian cancer the best option for you is to undergo bilateral oophorectomy. It is a small procedure and can be done laparoscopically . A hysterectomy will only remove your uterus and not your ovaries and so is of no use alone. You might consider removal of both your uterus and ovaries although it will have no effect on the risk of you developing ovarian cancer. But removal of ovaries is mandatory.
