Should I See A Doctor If Had Diarrhoea After Taking Antibiotics For Tooth Infection?

Hello. I have just taken 2 kinds of antibiotics (not at the same time) for a tooth infection. Cephalexin and Clindemyecin. I started off taking the Cephalexin, felt it wasn t working on my infection, so started a round of clindemycin which did help with the tooth infection. AFter part of my root canal was finished I continued to finish up the Cephalexin because I was afraid the infection would return before I was able to get in to have my root canal finished (which happened finally yesterday). I haven t taken any antibiotics since last Friday morning and over the weekend, I felt pretty good, but yesterday I started feeling very sick and had very painful strained diarrhea. It has continued today but is a little better than yesterday. I m very scared because I ve heard so many stories about C. Difficile. Should I wait it out a few more days, and if it doesn t resolve itself, go see a doctor then?

Hello,
You are most probably suffering from antibiotic associated colitis called pseudo membranous colitis which most often caused by Clostridium difficile . In severe cases can lead to life threatening condition such as Toxic megacolon. The worse offenders are clindamycin and cephalosporin. So you should consult a physician as soon as possible. As this condition arises due to cytotoxin produced by the bacteria which do not dissolve itself. Some tests will be done by your doctor like colonoscopy, complete blood count.
Take care, bye.
