Should I Stop Taking Synthroid And Have Surgery Despite Abnormal Thyroid Levels?
I am scheduled for surgery on 9-18 and my bloodwork has come back as hyperthyroid level of .18 . The surgeon is recommending that I stop taking synthroid starting tomorrow and continue with the scheduled surgery. I am very anxious about this . Should I wait and get thyroid levels more normal ?
You are probably moving towards the hypothyroid range due to your synthyroid tablet which is prescribed to you at a higher doses at what you need. So, that's why doctor has asked you to stop your medicine. I feel is surgery is planned within few days, you can consider stopping your medicine for few days. But it should not be stopped for a long period of time as it will make you hypothyroid again. So, check with your doctor before deciding further.
Hope I have answered your query. Thanks and Regards Dr. Ankur Pruthi
