Should MRI Be Done For Swelling And Pain Under Knee Cap?

I am 61 yrs old & recently began a running training (on my own). I injured my right knee last week & I think it might be the lateral condyle of the tibia. I have iced it, taken otc anti-imflam. for the past week (I have not been able to stay off of it for the entire 7 days however). I can bend it & straighten it. It is swollen & hurts bad right under the knee cap. Should I get an MRI? or keep self-dr-ing?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

A preliminary xray of the injured area is necessary to rule out any bony injury in your knee joint. If the xray is negative for any fracture, then you might need an MRI scan to assess any damage to the intra articular structures like meniscal cartilages, cruciate ligaments and collateral ligaments.

As your pain & swelling is still persisting even after 7 days of first aid, I feel that there is no role of any self treatment or home remedies.

I suggest you to consult an orthopedic surgeon for a detailed clinical examination and further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
