Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Should TSH Level Be Checked In A Child With No Symptoms?
For a 2nd opinion, is it necessary to check a TSH level in a 9 y/o who is not exhibiting any s/s when 2 yrs ago the initial check was abnormal but the 2nd recheck drawn a couple months later was normal? As a parent, I don't feel that this is necessary.
It is better to check TSH level again after a gap of 6 months, since it was abnormal 2 years ago. There is a rare possibility of wrong lab reports. Further sub clinical hypothyroidism can turn into clinical hypothyroidism. Hence children with sub clinical hypothyroidism require follow up of their thyroid status.
