Should UTI Be Treated Immediately In A Person With Kidney Disease?

my family member was just diagnosed with sponge kidney disease and has one malformed kidney. She now has a very painful UTI but the hospital won t prescribe an antibiotic until she see s the kidney specialist next week. I am concerning the infection needs treatment sooner. What should we do? Thank you. YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Welcome and thanks for the consult. I appreciate your concerns. I have reviewed your query about Kidney disease and UTI.

Better is to take her to the emergency department in order to treat the UTI. The Physicians may be reluctant to treat the UTI with antibiotics as most of the drugs are excreted via urine and we don't know how much of her kidneys are damaged. Medications may affect her kidneys unless ruled out to be safer for her otherwise.

Hope it helps. Ask for more if you have doubts or questions.
Regards!
