Hello Shreya
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
By 10 weeks of pregnancy, the normal heartbeat of the baby should be around 140 beats per minute ( bpm ).
40 bpm is definitely bradycardia.
IT indicates an abnormally growing pregnancy, which is about to expire by itself.
Yes, your doctor is right - this pregnancy should be terminated.
So a D and C is the correct procedure.
The baby should definitely be sent for genetic and chromosomal analysis.
This help to form a specific diagnosis, and also, thereby avoid similar complications in the future.
Most women with first trimester abortions go on to deliver normally the next time.
So do not worry.
Avoid a pregnancy for 6 months atleast.
In this interim time period, please take daily 5 mg per day folic acid tablets.
Get your blood sugars tested and your thyroid hormone levels also measured.
All the best.
Take care.
