Should Hot Compress Be Used For Pain Above The Knee Cap?

Yes. Hello Dr. Rynne. Mhy name is Janet, and I am a 56 year old woman in good health, but took a nasty spill this evening on a sidewalk as my toe caught on a crack in the sidewalk. I landed on both knees, and somewhat on my hands, too. Left knee seems to have taken the brunt of the fall. it is abit skinned and red, and the pain is primarily to the top side of the knee cap. Going down steps is very painful. I am never sure on these type of things if one should use hot or cold.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Is there any effusion of joint? Any swelling of joint?

Possible causes are muscle injury or cruciate ligament injury or cartilage injury etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.

Take rest, apply cold and worm compression, use NSAIDS and pain killer medication.

If symptoms not improved please consult your orthopedician he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Take care.
