I am 76+ Vegetraian , retd in 2005from Sugar Industry but with little physical activities now , a known case of Diabetes II & BP both under control with HbA1c below 6.5. Recently I hd . seen a programme on Hypoglycemia , wherein it was mentioned that in case of eledrly persons with known cases of Diabetes II , there may not be any symptoms like running down ,exhaustion etc, before an attack of Hypoglycemia. Earlier I was taking Glyciphage Tab for Diabetes Control , which was replaced by Amryl , but during Jan 2011 , executive check up , the Consulting Dr replaced it by Amryl M 1 , twice a day ,. Though I am taking Amryl M since Jan 2011 with good control on Diabetes & other parameters incl Renal , LFT , Ultrasound etc.being normal and self of own expressed a desire to change Amryl M for any long term side effects but Drs hv advised to continue. Recently the Dr in Hypoglycemia programma has advised to replace Amryl M 1, by Tab Istameit 50+1000. May I hv yr learned views about the change pl , recommendations for the change pl. Thanks S.P.Jain

Dear sir i can understand your concern.
I am very happy you are this conscientious because having a well controlled blood sugar is very important in preventing the onset of diabetic complications.

what you said is absolutely correct.

The latest guidelines are telling that in elderly diabetic individuals its not advisable to go for a very tight control.
Amaryl M1 is a good medication but comparatively powerful than istamet.
In My opinion i suggest you to meet your doctor and discuss with him regarding the change of medication.
you can make use of latest technology like CGMS(continuous glucose monitoring systems) which can monitor your blood sugars even in sleep without pricking for number of times. This device is like small chip attached to your skin and can be used in home also.
This kind of devices will help us to detect low sugar which are not showing any symptoms.
kindly discuss with your doc for further action.
