Should Otolaryngologist Be Consulted For Persistent Pain In Temporal Region?

I think I may have temporal arteritis. I have had off and on temporal pain for the last year and none of my docs can tell me the reason. These headaches are not a regular headache. I can t take aleve or that type of med because I have kidney problems. Would it help if I went to an otolaryngologist? Theresa

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Temporal arteritis usually presents with:
- Persistent headache, mainly in the temples with radiating pain to scalp and jaw (pain worsen during jaw movements)
- Loss of vision
- Fever
- Fatigue etc., are other features
I advise you to watch for the episodes and other symptoms too. Also, if it's confirmed, then it should be treated immediately, as it might cause permanent vision loss, stroke, aneurysm etc.
The mainstay treatment is gluco-corticoids which can be taken in higher doses and later on it can be tapered. And also do the blood ESR count, USG if needed.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Yogapriya Vasudevan, General & Family Physician
