Should Pilonidal Cyst Be Removed Causing Severe Pain?

When can a pilonidal cyst be removed. I have one that is very swollen and is extremely painful when I sit down, I basically can't sit down (i'm standing over my laptop right now). However, i do not believe the cyst has come to a head. Can it be removed now even though there is no head? Also, i thought the removal of my first pilonidal cyst was the worst pain of my life so i was wondering if it is ok to undergo general anesthesia during the removal of a pilonidal cyst. Thank you for your response

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Pilonidal cyst should be ideally removed by surgery (incision and drainage). What you are experiencing is an acute infection of the cyst (abscess) and hence you are experiencing pain. At this acute stage, it is not advisable to get operated.
You need to take a course of antibiotics and analgesic drugs so that the infection subsides. Following this, it can be removed by surgery.
Ideally, the operation can be performed under local anesthesia.
Yes, to decrease the intensity of pain, it can be performed under short acting general anesthesia (GA).
It would be better if you could attend to your problem soon by consulting Surgeon.
Hope the information provided would be better.
All the best and wish you speedy recovery.
