Should Sodium Intake Be Lowered While Suffering From Atrial Fibrillation?

I have just left the hospital after being treated for atrial fibrillation. I have read some articles and would like an opinion on the necessity of a low sodium diet. Some literature I have seen suggests that a sodium restricted diet is not necessary.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, low salt diet is recommended. Too much salt contributes to high blood pressure, which can increase your risk for atrial fibrillation and make the symptoms hard to control. You should limit your salt intake to less than 2,400 milligrams a day. That means you need to avoid 'extra salt' from pickles, canned soups, processed meats and packed snacks.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
