Should The Full Vaccination Schedule Be Followed After Dog Bite?
Hi, I have had rabies vaccination 5 years ago (all three jabs) and recently I got only slightly bitten by a dog. I received another verorab injection 48hrs after the bite and a day 3 injection as well. The doctor in Vietnam where i first got the treatment said i would need 5 injections, however the doctor in Australia said i only needed the two booster injections. Who is correct?
I appreciate your concern for the vaccination schedule following re-exposure to dog bite.
As per WHO Expert Committee (8th report) recommendations the persons who had previously received full pre- or post-exposure treatment (5 doses) with a potent cell-culture vaccine (like Verorab) should be given only two booster doses intramuscularly (into the deltoid muscles) on days 0 & 3,
On the other hand persons who have previously received pre- or post-exposure treatment with vaccines of unproven potency (non cell-cultured) vaccines and those who have not demonstrated an acceptable rabies neutralizing antibody titre, should receive a complete post-exposure course on days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days.
Hope the explanation given above could have cleared your doubts.
In your case two booster doses of Verorab are needed on days 0 and 3.
