Sinus Drainage, Cold. Have Diabetes And Hypertension. Suggestions?

I have had a head cold with sinus drainage now for 2 weeks. The sinus drainage has been clear but it is a nusiance. I have diabetes and high blood pressure so do not take hardly any of the over the counter remedies. I m about ready to go to my doctor. What do you suggest? Have had no fever, cough, or felt bad just a lot of drainage.

Hello,
The most common cause for the sinusitis is viral infection but it generally becomes all right in 7 to 10 days.Sinusitis which is present for more than is generally due to bacterial infection but can be caused by fungal infection.Sinusitis due to fungal infection can take place in diabetics or in people having low immunity as in AIDS.
You can go ahead with an antibiotic course of AUGMENTIN 625 mg three times a day along with steam inhalation twice a day.AUGMENTIN is supposed to be one of the best antibiotics for bacterial sinusitis and is taken for 5 to 7 days.Consult your doctor for it's prescription.
If you still don't become all right, then best would be to consult a ENT and get a possible CT scan along with sinus endoscopy and tissue sample for culture and histology.
Thanks

OBGYN Dr. Shanti Vennam's  Response
Hi,
You should definitely see your doctor if you have any headache, fever, prolonged period of sinus drainage for more than 2 weeks as you have now and difficulty in vision after the sinus problem. Meanwhile, you can apply warm moist cloth on your face, take steam inhalations, drink plenty of water to liquefy the mucus secretions and use a nasal saline spray several times a day. Eat plenty of fresh fruits as permitted by your dietitian and fresh vegetables. Avoid stress. Wish you speedy recovery.
