Small Painful Bump Inside Nostril, Bleeds When Picked. What Could It Be ?

Hi, for the passed several months I have had small bump inside my nostril. However, it is close to the outside of the nostril. It is slightly painful like a pin prick when ever i touch it. Every now and again I start picking at it an it continues to stay there. It has bled a few times when picking at it, but not always. Feeling it now, it almost feels like excess cartilage. What could it be?

A bump in the nose is usually caused due to folliculitis. It is an infection at the root of your hairs, and the causative organism is bacteria. Staphylococcus bacteria are the common organism to cause bump inside the nose.
A bump in the nostril requires an early medical or surgical intervention. This is because of probable complication, cavernous sinus thrombosis a relatively fatal condition. The veins of the nose and brain are interlinked; any nasal infection can spread to the brain through these veins.

ENT Specialist Dr. A.K. Srivastava's  Response
Hello

Welcome in H.C.M.

I read your query and after analysing the symptoms and co-relating the events it appears that you are most likely having bleeding septal polyp, this is an inflammatory polyp and on touching it mild to moderate pain is felt with tendency to bleed.

You are advice to go for-

(a) X-Ray paranasal sinuses.

(b) Blood- CBC, BT, CT, Prothrombin time.

(c) Culture & Sensitivity of nasal swab.

These investigation will tell us about other possibilities as - Collumelar dislocation, Anterochoanal polyp, etc.

At present you may take -

(a) Avoid picking nose.

(b) Oxymetazolin nasal drop.

In the mean time try to consult your ENT doctor for surgical excision of this polyp.

Regards.
