Small, Red Raised Sac In Front Of The Neck, Bleeding, Sticky Substance Flowing. Consult Doctor?
My 9 year old son has has a small, red, raised sac about the size and shape of a tick tack on the front of his neck. He hasn't complained of any discomfort associated with it and has no fever that I have noticed. this evening I noticed a small amount of blood on his neck near the bump and that it was leaking a sticky looking substance with a small amount of blood as well. It does NOT look like a pimple of any kind. I am wondering if this should be cause for alarm and possibly what it could be and whether I should seek immediate medical attention or wate to take him to a family physician on Monday.
This can be the remains of the thyroglossal duct,a fistula may be present in the neck(this opens in the midline) which may discharge blood stained fluid from time to time. This will extend from the base of the tongue to the neck. This is usually not congenital but follows upon infection of a thyroglossal cyst.Surgical excision is the treatment.
