I am a basket case worrying about my elevated liver enzymes. I also had a sonogram that showed Slightly increased echotexture of the liver with no focal hepatic mass lesion demostrated on ultrasound. My doctor suggested I see a liver specialist because of this. But, I no longer have insurance because my Husband lost his job. My CMP was as follows :
Glucose 76 potassium 3.9 Sodium 141 Total Protein 7.5 AST 63 ALT 50 ALP148 Total Bilirubin .74 Albumin 3.6 Urea Nitrogen 12 Calcium 8.5 Creatinine 0.6 CO2 28 CL 104 Anion Gap 12.9 Bun/ Creatinine Ratio 20.0 EGFR >60 A/G Ratio 0.9 Globulin 3.9
I had gastric bypass surgery 2 years ago and my enzyme levels were up then too and during surgery the Dr. was able to see my liver and said I had fatty liver ( I had been a heavy drinker off and on over many years before my surgery) but it wasn't bad. My levels were all norrmal except for my ALP (which has always been high) over the last year . I started drinking again (too much wine at least 3 times a week) and now they are what I shared with you. Do you think I caused further damage? I am just going to stop drinking but I am scared to death !
Hello and welcome to HCM, The ultrasound report of the liver suggests fatty liver disease. The liver function tests reveal an increase in liver enzyme levels (SGOT and SGPT). The increase level of liver enzymes is seen in cases of fatty liver. Fatty liver is a reversible condition. Alcohol is the most common cause of fatty liver. Cessation of alcohol will revert the changes in liver and also revert back the level of liver enzymes.
