Hi my husband has been feeling sick for the last past 4 days. It started with a sore throat then fever so he went to a Dr who said it might be an ear infection he prescribed Azithromycin 250mg he s been on it for 2 days But now he can t even swallow with out having extreme pain So I told him to open his mouth to see his throat and half of he throat I can t see of how swollen his left side is. Is that normal? How can we get rid of that faster? Thank you for your time Hope to hear from you very soon

hello and welcome to HCM,

I have understood your concern about the swelling and pain which your husband is suffering.

You may be having an acute episode of tonsillitis and pharyngitis which has to be treated properly so that you can have good relief:
1. I would routinely perform a throat swab for proper treatment and management.
2. I would also advice you to take injectable medication which can give you faster and better symptom control
3. I would also start on an anti reflux medication like pantoprazole for proper control
4. If you are getting recurrent infections and the tonsils are enlarged then you may consider tonsillectomy for better relief

take care and avoid cold drinks

ENT Specialist Dr. Vaishali Mehta's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for writing to HCM.
Pain and difficulty while swallowing is commonly due to infection of your tonsils and throat. But, since you are saying that one half of his throat is swollen and the pain is very severe, pus formation and swelling of the tonsillar tissues needs to be ruled out. If it is a severe infection of tonsil you may need antibiotics through your vein and occasionally a needle drainage of the pus for faster resolution. So, please get an ENT Consult for the same, as he will be able to decide on the best treatment after physically examining your throat.

You can give him pain medication like ibuprofen/ paracetamol along with antiseptic throat gargles in the meantime. Hope your husband has a speedy recovery. Do let us know if you have any more queries.

Regards,
Dr Vaishali
