I have a son (age 11yrs ) he s been complaining of sore throat for x2wks. I am a RN so as you can imagine I did an assessment and found a huge goiter type lump but not lymph nodes swelling. I took him to the MD and he drew labs. His TSH was off the scale. what do you think it can be. My Xmas is not going to be pleasant for me but I am trying to keep dad and siblings motivated. Standing by for your comments.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Jagdish's Response
Hi. Welcome To HealthcareMagic
Where is the swelling? Is it in the neck or throat? If it is in the neck it could thyroid swelling? Or it could be thyroglossal cyst? You say TSH is off the scale and I think it could be related to thyroid. If it is thyroglosssal cyst surgery maybe required. If it is thyroid swelling we need to whether it is overactive (TSH low) or underactive (TSH high). Treatment depends on the cause.
If the swelling is in the throat it could be adenoids. Then he needs surgery.
But it will be correctable under any conditions. It will be benign swelling.
Happy Christmas.
Regards, Dr. Jagdish
