My 96 year old mom has been wheelchair bound for the past 2 years. She has a mild systolic murmur which creates no problems, spinal stenosis, kyphosis, and spondithiliosis for which she wears a 100 mcg fentanyl pain patch. Her B/P is very normal, she is alert, and mostly in good health except for waking up with severe acid reflux after she begins to lean slightly forward in bed several mornings a week to change an incontinence pad herself to prevent wetting the bed. This action seems to trigger the burning, squeezing pain. She takes Prilosec 20 mg and Pepsid twice daily. She sits up for about 3 hours after eating before lying down in bed. Could the very slight strain of leaning forward in bed cause esophgeal spasms and reflux?
