Sprained Ankle, Swelling, Paining. Treatment?

Hi, badly sprained ankle 2 weeks ago playing rugby. Had xray within 3 hours of doing it and doc said no break. Ankle still swollen, on crutches, still painful can't move it and swelling covers whole of lower leg when I'm up. What should I do? Been refered to specialist
but not sure how long it will take. Is there a chance it may be broken and has been missed? Ligament on outside of ankle was popped out and is still Stuck out.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the given description, I suspect that you could have suffered Grade 2 or 3 ankle sprain because simple sprains (grade 1) will heal spontaneously within 1-2 weeks.

An MRI scan is needed to know the severity of injury to the soft tissue structures around the ankle.

The general management guidelines of ankle sprain includes the following measures -

• Protection – protect the injured area from further injury, by using a support or, in the case of an ankle injury, wearing shoes that enclose and support your feet, such as lace-ups.
• Rest – Stop the activity that caused the injury, and rest the injured joint or muscle.
• Compression – Apply a compression bandage around the injured area to limit any swelling and movement that could damage it further. You can use a crepe bandage. It should be wrapped snugly around the affected area but not so tightly that it restricts blood flow.
• Elevation – keep the injured area raised and supported on a pillow to help reduce swelling.
• Analgesics - Use simple painkillers like Advil or Aleve to reduce the pain and inflammation.

I suggest you to consult an orthopedic sports medicine specialist for further evaluation and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
