Squeezing Sensation In Neck With Pain Radiating Down Left Shoulder Blade, Persistent Cough, Enlarged Thyroid. Reason ?
For the last two days I have had a squeezing sensation in my neck with pain radiating down to my left shoulder blade and some in my chest. I have had a persistent cough for over two months. The coughing is worse at night and it gets so bad that I am choking and having a hard time catching my breath. After some research I am thinking that is consistent with an enlarged thyroid, I have Hypo and have been on medicine for several years. Are my symptoms consistent with this or could it be my heart? I have had two Stress Echo's the most recent was April 2012 and the findings have been great. I do have high blood pressure that has been very inconsistent even with my medications. Please help if you can. I don't want to panic and go to the emergency room and it not be serious. I am also on Cholesterol meds and I am a 51 year old female.
Hello. Thanks for writing to us. The persistent cough and the enlarged thyroid gland that you are having is not related to the pain in the neck. This is likely to be due to cervical spondylosis. Neck isometric exercises and oral muscle relaxants will help. I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you. Your symptoms do not suggest CAD. Pain from the heart is oppressing, in central chest (and left), worse on effort, relieved by rest, may radiate to shoulders and arms, associated with sweating and so on Drugs like ACEI (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitor) used for blood pressure can cause cough.. Thyroid or Lymph nodes may compress the trachea and cause cough.... Pain could be from degenerative changes of the spine... X-ray chest / MRI cervical spine (for root compression) / and thyroid scan may be necessary...
Take care Wishing speedy recovery God bless Good luck
