Stomach Pain, Partial Consciousness, Loss Of Vision, Thigh Stiffening. Reason?

my daughter is 19 years old for some two years she has suffered from severe stomach pain , she has had episodes where sh has gone unconscious for 5 minutes and recently started to suffer with severe stomach pain and episodes of partial consciousness , loss of vision , stiffening of thighs and the jelly legs when trying to stand up, hence tonight she is suffering and we are sleeping downstairs. she has just had her 2 nd endoscopy on Monday gone and she has still got oesphagitis even though she has had a diet free of gluten, wheat, dairy and over the summer holidays sugar, as I furmly believe this is a trigger. She has been prescribed coliflac, omephrozol, and recently timophrate.. sorry for spelling just so tired..

Dear Lady,

Thanks for reposing your faith in us. I can fully understand your concern for your daughter's ailment(s).

Frankly speaking, I cannot comment upon the grounds on which repeated endoscopy was performed and a diagnosis of esophagitis made.

However, let us focus on the sequence of events : abrupt stomach pain --> loss of consciousness --> transient loss of vision ---> stiffening of thighs, followed by perceived weakness in legs.

Such sequence of events can be seen in certain types of Epilepsy. I will therefore recommend that you consult a Neurologist who will order for EEG/CT scan of Brain to exclude/confirm Epilepsy. It may be a remote possibility, but should nevertheless, be kept in mind.

Further, similar episodes can also be seen in a relatively rare condition called Acute Intermittent Porphyrias. you may discuss the possibility with your Family Physician who will in turn, guide you how to go about ruling out this rare condition.

you are always welcome to seek further clarifications, if any.

Fond regards,

Dr. Karanwal
