Stool Test For Diarrhea, Bloating And Indigestion Showed Pus Cells And Bacteria In Stools. What Is The Treatment?

Hi, I had been suffering from diarrhea, flatulence and indigestion for last 17 years. I have tried all variety of medicines and consulted many gastroenterologists, but nothing helped. I went through hypnotherapy, enema, colonoscopy, endoscopy..etc but none were helpful.

Recently I went through Lasik eye surgery and they prescribed me to take ciprodac which contains Ciprofloxacin. Within taking 2 days of it , it affected my digestive system. Improper evacuation bowel problem got solved automatically. I was prescribed to take ciprodac for 5 days ( 2 tabs each day). But still I had the flatulence problem.

Now I was happy as the problem which I suffered for 17 years was partially solved by medicine meant for eye surgery. But now the problem I have is again the same symptoms started appearing ( improper bowel evacuation, diarrhea, gas). So I consulted the doctor again and he asked me to go for normal stool test and culture stool test.

The normal stool test report says that I have pus cells in stool (2-4/hpf) and also have bacteria. Now my question is
1) Is some wiered bacteria responsible for diarrhea and gas? If yes then did ciprodac killed it ?
2) If ciprodac killed all the bad bacteria then how come same symptoms appeared 10 days after I completed the ciprodac tabs?
3) Could this problem be because of pus cells and not bacteria?
4) is having 2-4 pus cells (2-4/hpf) normal?
5) What is the treatment for this pus cells?

Gastroenterologist 's  Response
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist (DM).

Presence of pus cells in stool suggest infection, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. Since colonoscopy and endoscopy both were normal suggest that it is either due to IBS or some infection.
1,2 and 5. Diarrhea and gas may be caused by bacteria. Ciprofloxacin is good broad spectrum medicine bus some resistance is noted. So ofloxacin will be a better choice along with ornidazole
3. Pus cells are due to bacteria only so bacteria is problem
4. No it is not normal

You may also get stool culture and take antibiotics accordingly

I hope I have answered your query and this will help you. If you have any further query I will be happy to answer that too. Remain in touch and get-well soon.
