Suddenly Calf Muscles Gets Hard While Swimming. What Could This Be?

Hi, im 15, male, 5 8 , and about 115lb. I m not sure If what I had was a cramp , My calf muscle just got really hard like if I was flexing but i had it completely relaxed. It happened while I was swimming yesterday. Its very rare, it only happened once before about a year ago. It also happens on the bottom of my foot under my big toe around the middle left area. But that happens more often and doesnt hurt as much. It lasts longer on my calf and hurts WAY more than it does on my foot. What could this be?

hi oscar, what you are experiencing is a muscle cramp which can be caused due to the cold temperature of water or due to insufficient warm up before the swim or also could be due to decreased intake of fluids or excessive loss of fluids and electrolytes from the body besides many other not so common causes. You need to see that you are well hyderated prefrebly with adequate salts in the fluid. You also need to warm up sufficiently before any strenous physical activity. You can get a serum calcium levels done to rule out calcium deficiency. Presently you may not get treated but can massage the calf and keep it warm in case it happens again.
