Suffered Intussuspection Twice, Did Saline Reduction. MRI Report Normal. Removed Appendix. Will It Occur Again?
good mornng,
my son was suffered by intussuspection from the 8th month onwards and again he got the same problem by his 10th month. then we took him to the doctor and they did saline reduction. 10 days ago twice he faced the same proble. so doctor adviced that due to recurrent intussuspection will take the MRI scan and will do the surgery. MRI scan report is normal. No polyps seen, but doctor did the surgery and removed his appendix too. i want to know in future the same problem will occur or not
Intussusception is diagnosed when one aspect of the bowel goes into the other.
The exact reason that this occurs is not known.
The recurrence rate after an initial event can be as high as 15%, this means that 15 out of 100 children would have another episode as your son did.
In some children, the recurrence may be related to a lead point in the bowel that may be involved in the intussusception. This would have likely be identified on MRI and in surgery if one was present.
It is difficult to say whether he would have a 3rd episode but the absence of a lead point reduces the chances.
I hope this helps
