Suffering From Aphasia After Ischemic Stroke, Little Improvement In Speech. Time For Full Recovery?
sir, My father had an ischemic stroke with aphasia 4 months ago., though he had shown recovery up to 55% physically. But his speech problem is really a matter for concern for us. In fact, he has shown little improvement in his speech. I would like to know how long will it take for full recovery?
Hi Vishal,
Recovery from stroke can take months. If there is progressive improvement, then patients can show improvement even upto 1 year after the stroke. Improvement happens because the parts of the brain around the infarcted (dead) portion take over the function. The speed at which this happens depends on the age of the person and the reserve brain capacity. Speech therapy will be particulaly useful in this situation. Sometimes, some of the function lost due to stroke never recovers or only partially recovers. Only time will tell.
further, it is very important that he is on medicines to prevent a further stroke and tests are done to see if there is a plaque in his neck vessels which throw off emboli into the brain.
Hope this helps
