Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Most of the times, nocturnal calf cramps occur for no reason and are usually harmless. In general, these are likely to be related to muscle fatigue (due to overuse) or neurological problems. Though typically seen in calf muscles, these can affect thigh musculature also.

These nocturnal cramps are also linked to number of medical conditions and certain medications -
* pregnancy, alchoholism, electrolyte disturbances, dehydration
* neuromuscular diseases
* Diabetes, thyroid disorders
* Drugs like statins (cholesterol drugs) and certain diuretics

There are few ways to prevent this cramps like -
* Make sure that you stay hydrated—drink six to eight glasses of water each day.
* Gently stretch your leg muscles before you go to sleep.
* Keep blankets and sheets loose around your feet so that toes are not distorted.
* Spend a few minutes riding a stationary bicycle before going to bed.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Hypokalemia ( depletion of potassium ),
Deficiency of Vitamin E,
Stress ( tension & anxiety),
Anemia ( mainly in females).
Hypertension ( also hypotension).
Consult a physician and get his opinion.
Good luck.
