Suffering From Hypertension, grass Hematuria With Frequent Burning Urination

Iam 67 yr old female, 154 lbs, 5ft tall. I am hypertensive, but controlled w/medication (Losartan). I am also early diabetic, and on metforfin 500 mg./day.I don t take alcohol and do not smoke but sometimes exposed to second hand smoke. In 2008 to 2010 I had repeated episodes of gross hematuria with frequent burning urination, treated as UTI. My ultrasound normal, stonogram negative for stones. Symptoms disappeared but recurred January this year. CT stonogram negative. I underwent cystoscopy with biopsy which showed urothelial neoplasm of low malignany potential. I have strong family history of different cancers: my mom died of lung cancer, my brother of pancreatic cancer. My mom s siblings had bronchogenic ca, vulvar ca, liver ca. My urologist suggest periodic cystoscopy for monitoring. I am so worried about developing cancer . What are my chances?

Hi

Urothelial neoplasia is a unique cancer in that is consists of a spectrum of tumors with different biologic behaviors. The most common urothelial neoplasm is the low grade superficial papillary carcinoma or papilloma which may recur numerous times but does not result in significant morbidity or mortality.

Hence do not worry.I would suggest periodic cystoscopy inorder to monitor if any aggressive growth of tumour is present.Periodic cystoscopy is unanimously recommended by all guidelines with early initial cystoscopy at 3-4 months after treatment and cytology with subsequent cystoscopy for patients at intermediate- or high-risk.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
