Hello and welcome to HCM.
Thank you for writing to us.
Thank you for your mother's history. It is fairly important. Now let me help you with all the basic details and guide you through helping your mother.
First of all, let me explain the symptoms of a
urinary tract infection (UTI), so your mother can relate to this. They are:
-Frequent urination
-Burning sensation before, during or even after urinating
-Fever
-Chills
-Increased urge to urinate but less amount of urine passed
-Lower abdominal and/or flank region pain
-Itching around genitals
Please note that not all symptoms need to be present to make a diagnosis of a UTI. Now, after a clinical suspicion is raised from these symptoms being present, we will have to confirm the presence of a UTI with the help of a urine analysis. This investigation will provide more information on the UTI. I would also recommend a urine culture in your mother's case, as she is elderly and we should not take a chance. This particular investigation further confirms the infection by giving information and identifying the infection-causing organism, and the most suitable antibiotic that can be used. This information is vital in your mother's case, as it will help ensuring quick and effective treatment of her symptoms and relieving them simultaneously.
Although microscopic blood is commonly seen in patients suffering from a UTI, it is not visible to the naked eye. Thus, if your mother is seeing blood in her urine, there could possibly be another cause to this. Either the
ecosprin or some underlying cause like a
kidney stone, etc.
To rule out other causes an abdominal and pelvic
ultrasound would greatly help. Thus, you could request for the same.
In the meantime, please ask your mother to have plenty of water and you could also add cranberry juice to her diet, as this has proven to have some benefits in relieving UTI-related symptoms.
I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.
Best wishes.
