Hi Maha
Let me clear your misunderstanding.
Ascorbic Acid or Vitamin -C is not forbidden for G6PD (Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase) deficient person. There are a few reported cases of
Hemolysis in G6PD deficient individual with Very High dose of Ascorbic acid. But remember - 'VERY HIGH DOSE'. That is why Vitamin-C / Ascorbic acid is not enlisted in forbidden medicine list for G6PD deficient individual.
Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase is an enzyme, deficiency of which make Red Blood Cells (
RBC) labile to oxidative damage, resulting in hemolysis. Antioxidant rich foods can supply the
antioxidants which fight
oxidative stress and protect RBC.
As I already mentioned, ascorbic acid is not banned for G6PD deficient individual. So, citrus foods in low quantity will not cause any harm to G6PD deficient individual.
Foods that are richest in antioxidants are - berries (sour cherries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and black currants), cereals (oats, barley, millet or
corn), vegetables (peppers, artichokes, kale, brussels sprouts, spinach, parsley and red cabbage), roots (Ginger and red beet roots ), seeds and nuts (sunflower seeds and walnuts). These foods are good for G6PD deficient person.
Hope I could make it clear. Feel free to post if you have other queries.
