Normally surgery for pneumothorax is advised for patients who have had more than 2 episodes on the same side. If one has suffered from even one attack on each side on different occasions, he should be advised surgery. This is to prevent chances of bil pneumothorax which can be lethal. You should discuss with your pulmonologist the possibility of doing pleurodesis in your husband`s case-either chemical pleurodesis through the tube or surgical pleurodesis through VATS.
